The place that doubled as Rochdale’s High Street was East Street. When the film-makers wanted to recreate the grim streets of Rochdale for the BBC drama series Three Girls - which told the even grimmer story about grooming gangs targeting young girls in a decaying northern town, they didn’t, or couldn’t film it in Rochdale, so needed somewhere that looked like it could be. In the years since, the Internet has sucked up much of the trade that remained. Before the turn of the century, great out of town developments, supermarkets and retail parks took people into their cars and away from places like East Street. The score, which comprises mainly of a rhythm section, guitar, bass and drums, is one he describes as both “gentle and assertive.” With that note, Shaiman, who scored Ephron’s “Sleepless in Seattle,” thought of “A Wink and a Smile,” a song he co-wrote with Ramsey McLean.Īnd so with the “Bros” score, Shaiman says, “I thought of my song for that and paraphrased it a bit.” Director Nicholas Stoller and Eichner also wanted it to be contemporary enough, while “wanting it to sound like a Nora Ephron film.” Shaiman says he didn’t want the score to be period-specific, so he took a timeless approach. It turns out that as both the degrees and the translates go to infinity, the curves, which are intricately intertwined, never intersect, and completely cover and tile the complex plane. We could now do translations in all four compass directions and superimpose all the dragons, but I won't show that. As the country pieces itself back together and rebuilds, this bruised and battered machine becomes a lifeline, a route out of poverty - which makes its ultimate abandonment into first a storage cupboard, and then an antique shop, all the more heartbreaking. Churning out clothes in the war years, an air raid sees the titular sewing machine reduced to a mangled wreck, only to be salvaged and brought back to life by an impoverished woman in the aftermath of Japan’s defeat. The idea of an emotionally charged postwar experience is conveyed further in The Life Story Of A Sewing Machine, in which the narrative is centred around the tortured existence of a humble labour-saving device. Much like Kazuo Ishiguro - to make an obvious comparison - Nakajima has a listener’s ear for both the easy rhythms of conversational dialogue and the way this can be interweaved so artfully into the central narrative drive of a tale. There, what begins as a seemingly humble, almost banal depiction of domesticity and scenes of a historic Japan lost to time slowly reveals itself as a powerful statement on the postwar experience pulling back the veil that conceals the often cavernous gulf between official histories and personal memory. ![]() Part of the compelling power of The Little House was its status as a quiet masterpiece in subverting expectations.
